Few words make patients more nervous than “root canal”. Much of that fear comes from outdated stories. A modern root canal treatment is a routine, comfortable procedure that saves your natural tooth. Here are seven myths we hear often at Nexus Dental Center – and the facts.

Myth 1: Root canals are very painful

Fact: The pain comes from the infection, not the treatment. With local anaesthesia, a root canal usually feels similar to getting a filling – and it relieves the toothache that brought you in.

Myth 2: It is better to just pull the tooth

Fact: Keeping your natural tooth is almost always the better choice. An extracted tooth needs to be replaced with an implant, bridge or denture to prevent other teeth from shifting – which costs more time and money.

Myth 3: A root canal makes you ill

Fact: This idea comes from old research that has since been disproven. Removing infected tissue actually reduces the bacteria in your mouth.

Myth 4: If it does not hurt, I do not need one

Fact: A tooth can be infected or dying without pain. Signs include a darkening tooth, a small pimple on the gum, or swelling. An X-ray during a check-up can catch problems early.

Myth 5: It takes many painful visits

Fact: Many root canals are completed in one or two visits, depending on the tooth and the infection.

Myth 6: A root-canal-treated tooth will not last

Fact: With a well-fitting crown and good oral hygiene, a treated tooth can last a lifetime. Back teeth usually need a crown afterwards because they take heavy chewing forces.

Myth 7: Antibiotics can cure the infection instead

Fact: Antibiotics may reduce swelling for a while, but they cannot reach the infected pulp inside the tooth. Only cleaning the canals removes the source of infection.

Signs you may need a root canal

If you notice any of these, do not wait – early treatment is simpler and more comfortable.
